This afternoon I took a bite out of the spinning HD in my superannuated iMac and pushed a Linux installation into the gap.
So far, so good. The machine is still slow, given that the physical hard disk spins no faster now than with the Mac operating system. But the Mac display rot has not made an appearance, and I expect it will never do so.
